Sustainable October : Laundry Day

It is laundry day at my house. I wanted to take today and talk about the sustainable things you can do in your home during laundry day. The biggest thing is to make sure to not use too much water and not to use the wrong type of soap. If you don’t have a washer and dry in your home don’t worry! You can use a laundry mat and still be green!

So, few things I do the help be more sustainable when doing my laundry.

Use Cold Water. It helps keep your clothes in shape and also helps save energy. It also helps wash away extra soup from the clothes.

Line Dry when You Can. I do use a dryer pretty often. However, I do use line dry when I can. It is really easy to install an indoor line or an out door line. They are very inexpensive and easy to install.

Use sustainable soap. I use Mrs. Meyers. But here are the top 15 laundry brands for sustainable living.

  1. Tide Purclean
  2. Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent
  3. Method 8X Free & Clear Laundry Detergent
  4. Tru Earth Laundry Strips
  5. The Laundress Sport Detergent
  6. Method 4X Concentrated Laundry Detergent
  7. Defunkify Active Wash Laundry Detergent Powder
  8. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Laundry Detergent
  9. Common Good Laundry Detergent
  10. Biokleen Laundry Liquid
  11. Greenshield Organic
  12. Charlie’s Soap
  13. Indigo Wild Zum Clean Laundry Soap

Also TerraCycle has recycle program for laundry soap packaging. My packaging is recyclable but some companies specifically like to recycle their own plastic.

Don’t Over wash. Don’t over wash your clothes. I don’t wash my jeans every day instead I spot clean them. I also hand wash some of my tops and delicates to save from washing them in the washing machine.
